Interesting Quote about “Nice Guys”

Well, as anyone who visits this blog knows, I read allot of different things across the blogsphere in regards to gender. If you’ve been readings in similar circles as I, you have likely read about “Nice Guys TM.” I’ve been reading Snakes in Suits: When Psychopaths Go to Work by Paul Blabiac & Robert D. Hare. This quote on pages 318-319 jumped right out:

“….Research at the University of British Columbia suggests that jerks are sexually more successful than nice guys, who often tend to finish last. Psychologist Paul Trapnell defines jerks as “manipulative, arrogant, boastful, calculating, quarrelsome, and sly.” They are cold enough not to worry about their effect on others. But why are they so successful at attracting women? Part of the reason is that they have fewer social inhibitions, try harder, and sell themselves better than do the rest of us.

For example, most men whose advances to a woman are rebuffed will slink away, their ego and self-image validated or damaged. They are unlikely to try again, unless the signs of interest from a woman are unmistakable. a jerk/psychopath, on the other hand, knows he is perfect an is not worried about being rejected: “It’s her problem, not mine.” He simply moves on to the next woman.

The same principles apply to other aspects of human interaction, including attempts to scam or manipulate others.”

Agree? Disagree? As always, comments welcome….

What is SOPA?

I’m still reviewing the legislation, but from what I’ve already read, this would mean the end of the Internet as we know it,”-Rep. Zoe Lofgren.

SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act. It was introduced to the House of Representatives by Texas Republican Lamar Smith on Oct.26, 2011. Protect IP Act was introduced to the Senate by a Democrat from Vermont, Patrick Leahy. Protect IP is a re-write of COICA-Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act. COICA failed to pass in 2010. SOPA combines two Senate Bills, Protect IP and Commercial Felony Streaming Act into one Act.

From Open Congress’s Summary:

“This bill would establish a system for taking down websites that the Justice Department determines to be dedicated to copyright infringment. The DoJ or the copyright owner would be able to commence a legal action against any site they deem to have “only limited purpose or use other than infringement,” and the DoJ would be allowed to demand that search engines, social networking sites and domain name services block access to the targeted site. It would also make unauthorized web streaming of copyrighted content a felony with a possible penalty up to five years in prison…”

Some of the supporters of the bill include the Recording Industry Association of America, Directors Guild of America, Motion Picture Association of America and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Some of those against the Bill include Google, Yahoo and the Consumer Electronics Association.

Now, there are currently laws on the book that protect copywright holders. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) was designed to increase the penalties for copywright infringement on the ‘net. Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act (OCILLA) is part of the DMCA. in short, this creates a so called “safe harbor.” It creates “immunity” for sites such as Youtube. It is possible that users may post material that they don’t own the copyright to. This would be against the Terms Of Service and Youtube could take down the video. Many are concerned that SOPA may do away with this. This could potentially have grave consequences for any site with user generated content-that includes blogs, forums, social networking sites, sites similar craigslist; basically most of the so-called Web 2.0 experience.

This letter from Mozilla and other tech companies illustrates the point: “One issue merits special attention. We are very concerned that the bills as written would seriously undermine the effective mechanism Congress enacted in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to provide a safe harbor for internet companies that act in good faith to remove infringing content from their sites. Since their enactment in 1998, the DMCA’s safe harbor provisions for online service providers have been a cornerstone of the U.S. Internet and technology industry’s growth and success. While we work together to find additional ways to target foreign rogue sites, we should not jeopardize a foundational structure that has worked for content owners and Internet companies alike and provides certainty to innovators with new ideas for how people create, find, discuss, and share information lawfully online.”

Domain Name System (DNS)
is a heirarchical system that turns a website, lets say, (easily recognized by humans) into (numerical identifiers for network equipment around the globe.) To see this in action, you can visit a site like this and type in your favorite website to see the IP Address. SOPA would allow judges to issue orders to DNS providers to make certain sites seemingly disappear. An entrepreneur and CEO of OpenDNS, David Ulevitch explains, “(SOPA)creates a tremendous amount of liability for ISPs and service providers like mine to become the censorship arm of the Department of Justice, which is not a position we want to be in,” He also mentions, “The legislation has the potential to create the great firewall of America,” and predicts this will be “extremely disruptive and destabilizing” to the internet.

In countries such as China, web filtering is employed at the national level. This is more for political control of information rather than copyright issues. Although illegal, many try to circumvent the filtering. Ultrasurf was “Originally created to help internet users in China find security and freedom online” but is now used by many others to circumvent filters and stay anonymous. One can easily speculate that frustrated American users would surely try to get to sites once unblocked by various methods. Where there is a will there is a way, however, this could easily compromise other aspects of network security. Americans may use proxy servers in far off lands to enjoy the freedom they previously had, unaware of increased risks. As stated in James Allworth’sThe Great Firewall of America article, “Amongst many other issues, Dan Kaminsky, chief scientist at security vendor DKH points out: “It’s not just that lookups to the Pirate Bay go overseas; lookups to Bank of America go overseas. This is handing over American Internet access to entities we explicitly do not trust, entities that are unambiguously bad guys.”

Is it possible this could this be used in an unethical way to abridge Free Speech? Perhaps as a means to shut down a blog that chronicles OWS, a judge may issue an order about a link to copyrighted material. And if you’ve got a leaning towards conspiracy theory and mistrust of the government, you might not find it hard to imagine that a hyperlink could’ve been “planted” by an agent. What if a judge accidentally miscategorizes something? What about due process, OCILLA allows for an offending site to take down content and not lose their stream of income. Will this? I understand the positions of the movie studios and musicians and support their rights to not have their hard work pirated, however there are just too many problems with SOPA.

What does this reply have to do with the article, nothing and everything….

So, I was over at the Great Inmalafide awhile back, I read a pretty forgetable article, but here was my reply:

Back in the day I knew a crazy Israeli dude, let’s call him “Orangutang.” He’d always offer me a smoke when we hung out at his pad, but I’d always decline.

One day we were talking on the phone and he says, with his accent “Man, you’re such a pussy, you never smoke with me when I offer. What’s up with that?”

After a long hesitation, I answered as honestly as possible, “Well, ah, yer kind of a big guy and you’ve got an awful temper. I don’t want to be incapacitated and say the wrong thing that makes you throw a sh*t fit.”

He yelled back, “I can’t believe you. You are sooooo immature, you fuc*er!”

After hanging up the phone, I couldn’t help laughing a little bit…..

intersting quote about America….

“America is no different than European countries where success is determined by your last name and your class. Except that while Europeans acknowledge their reality, Americans cover theirs in a blanket of pious Puritan lies. If you succeed in America, it’s not because you were born rich, you got lucky or you cheated and stole from people, it’s because you “pulled yourself up by your bootstraps.” And if you fail, it’s not because you were hamstrung by con men and scam artists, it’s because you’re just too stupid and lazy to make the grade. Get a job, slob! Nobody owes you anything! America is the land of the free and the home of the brave, and if you don’t like it, you can get out of my country!”

Red vs Blue

Well, if you’ve done much reading in the manosphere, you may have heard the that there are those who stay blissfully ignorant or those who pursue reality- a Blue Pill/Red Pill dicotomy. This is, in fact, a reference to the movie The Matrix. I have watched all three and while the finer points of the stories may have escaped me I did love the effects. Some say there is a deep philosophy behind the movies, books have been written to this effect. Now, when I had been reading about the Feminist theoretical construct of patriarchy, I often thought they might have been talking about a matrix like world. By way of Toysoldier, I discovered this article by Melissa McEwan. She states “Like the Matrix, which Morpheus described as “everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room… It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth,” the systemic sexism known as the patriarchy is so comprehensive and profound that “seeing it” actually takes some effort, some willingness to see it. And, like those who find themselves awakening from the Matrix, people who find themselves awakening from the patriarchy learn to identify its patterns, upon which it is dependent for the transmission of its ideals and its continual self-generation.”

Toysoldier rebukes with, “Not so surprisingly, McEwan fails to realize the irony of the comparison. Perhaps had she watched Reloaded and Revolutions she would have learned that Morpheus’ views and explanations are shown to be dogmatic, one-sided and false — just like the Matrix itself. The truth cannot be found simply by realizing that the Matrix is a false reality. That is only the beginning. One should–in fact one must–question every rule, every notion, every item of dogma, including whether one has attained knowledge. This means that one must be like Neo, not Morpheus (who represents systems like feminism), and assume that everything one is told may be false. Why? Simply because one has been shown that the world was not what it seemed to be.”

Anyways, there was an old movie I really liked called Dark City. It had some similarities to The Matrix….

I don’t know why, but upon watching the above video, this Alice in Chains video came to mind….

I usually get lost in involved stories but I like interesting visuals, maybe that’s why I like ‘shrooms 😉

Interesting quote about freedom….

“….For example, suppose you love art, have artistic talent, and decide you want to pursue a career as a visual artist. What does it mean to be free to do so? You will need access to an art school to develop your talent. That means a school will have a place for you, you will have to be admitted, you will have to have the money to attend, you will need to be sufficiently free of personal obligations, you will have to have the fortitude to go through rigorous training, and you will have to exercize your free will every step of the way without internal hangups stopping you. in short, the freedoms required to pursue a particular purposeful life may be extensive.”

-George Lakoff, Whose Freedom?

Work Sucks!

Well, I hate work…. I have to do it or I’ll wind up homeless though. I don’t know how to get those freebie government subsides all the tough guys in the manosphere always complain about. Y’know, that people of whatever skin color they don’t like are (supposedly) getting rich off of…

Seems to me there is allot of shaming language used when it comes to work. It seems it is just something the “managerial types” use to fatten up their bonuses at the expense of lower ranking employees. Crappy phrases like “man-up” have just gotta go.

“Not so long ago, the average American man in his 20s had achieved most of the milestones of adulthood: a high-school diploma, financial independence, marriage and children. Today, most men in their 20s hang out in a novel sort of limbo, a hybrid state of semi-hormonal adolescence and responsible self-reliance. This “pre-adulthood” has much to recommend it, especially for the college-educated. But it’s time to state what has become obvious to legions of frustrated young women: It doesn’t bring out the best in men. ”

Kay Hymowitz….

Yup, it seems men don’t have value for existing, just what they can do for others, especially women… Is this the real reason why all the weirdo’s at Manboobz hate Men Going Their Own Way? Maybe if those MRA types are planning to get anything done, they should talk about a new life script for males instead of just whining. Where am I going with this, you ask? Let’s say you have a son who loves music. Instead of bullying him into cutting his hair, getting a degree and getting a boring 9-to-5 in an office, maybe you should support his dreams of becoming the next Eddie Van Halen. I’m not saying you should pay all his bills while he lives in the basement ’till he is 40. I’m suggesting that you should let him have more flexibility than the traditional script. Y’know the flexibilty that women have had for the past 40 years. Some women want to pursue higher education, some want to be stay at home moms, some want to be starving artists. There needs to be a change in gender roles where men are seen as more than a walking paycheck.

That’s one problem I have with PUA and Game. It’s all about a man trying to “prove” his value, his “status”. I always found it irritating when someone would brag how many hours they work. Dude, you don’t need to clock all those extra hours just for new rims. Almost as pathetic as some guy trying to claim he is better than you cause he gets more pussy. Most guys realize, probably a little too late, that they can somewhat easily get money or sex but at the price of their dignity. Isn’t true status working as much or as little as you want and not giving a shit what others think. Oh, wait, I conflated that with freedom. Not the kind a stinky neo-con like George Bush talks about though. I guess I am outta touch, gotta start watching more TV and get with the program. NOT.

Now if you’ve read any MRA stuff, you’ve learned how unfair it can be if your marriage goes wrong with alimony and such other things. Interestingly enough, what those mostly right wing types leave out is how you are getting screwed in taxes. Even if you are not one of the 53% who pay Federal taxes, you are still paying other taxes whenever you buy something and also FICA taxes. Well, guess what, that money that is supposed to be for your retirement is running out. “While Medicare won’t have sufficient funds to pay full benefits starting in 2024, five years earlier than last year’s estimate, Social Security’s cash to pay full benefits runs short in 2036, a year sooner than the 2010 projection, the U.S. government said today in an annual report.”

Now, whether you are a minimum wage kid living at home or a six figure earner with six pack abs, this is still your money that should go back to you. Not to a banskers bailout. Not to an oil company. Not to a war for ” Iraqi Freedom.” George Lakeoff articulates this more eloquently than I ever could. “We must protect the prior earnings of American workers set aside in Social Security or private pensions. They have been earned through hard work and discipline. Taking these earnings away is theft, despite the Right’s use of the word “entitlements.”

Aw, well, as the Gods of Grind, Carcass beautifully stated in a great song:

“Just raw material
Your pound of flesh for the suzerain
Toiling, rotting
Life slowly dissipates
Consumed, inhumed
In a corruption line, mechanized
By mincing machinery, industrialized – crunched and brutalised
A grave to the blind ”
