…the Software as a Subscription business model explained…

My hobby is recording music. I used to use something called Pro Tools. I used an old Mac not connected to the internet and a piece of hardware called the Digi 001. If I wanted to put something online, I had to burn a CD and put it on a computer that could render the audio and then upload it.

I moved on, but not with Pro Tools. Pro Tools now has a subscription model that might make sense for someone who makes thousands of dollars a year recording or mixing audio, but it doesn’t make sense for “us little people.” I moved on to software that allows me to buy an edition and upgrade one or two generations later. Yes, there is still “planned obsolesence” but not a monthly fee.
